This movie is one of those rare horror classics with an original story-line and genuine scares propounded by the unpredictable ending of the film. Nicole Kidman, as always, is at her best at acting as the wife of a soldier that's gone to war.She lives in an old-stylized mansion without the basic neccessities such as electricity but it is cosy nonetheless and is located in a very desolate, eerie location in Britain. The events of this film takes place around the early 20th century and therefore the entire look of the film has been changed accordingly to complement the authencity of it and it's successful in doing that. She has two young children, a boy and girl who have a rare disease. They are allergic to sunlight and therefore must be kept in complete darkness notwithstanding candle-light within the confines of their house. The story starts out with the arrival of an old lady, a gentleman and their daughter in answer of an ad placed in the papers for house and garden helpers. They seem normal enough, in fact the entire setting seems normal enough at the beginning intentionally not prep aring us for the terrifying events that are bound to follow their arrival and the slow, painful unravelling of the senses of the lady of the house. The ending is quite a shocker, very unexpected and it'll leave you staring on in disbelief. This is quite simply one of the most original story-lines in a horror film that I've come across in a long time. Nicole Kidman's acting is superb (just what we expect from an oscar-winning actress! and she never lets us down.). She acts with genuine fear and emotion, when it comes to her breaking down, she does that wonderfully well too. The acting of the supporting cast is wonderful too. And most importantly the acting of the two children playing the two young ones in the movie are very professional and genuine. They say that the worst entities in any film are children and animals because most directors have such a time directing them and getting them to give out the sort of stellar performance that could give the film's credits a tremendous boost. I see that the director of this film had no such problem, they were so talented in playing their parts that the audience wouldn't need anything else to be convinced and stay convinced. The direction was great and the complementary music which was orchestrated and played in those unwitting circumstances of the film rendered chills and intense shocks to me when the unexpected parts of the film just jumped out at me. All in all a great movie to watch for lovers of the horror/ thriller genre. I guarantee you won't be disappointed. I'm sure that many of your'll have already watched the film because it was released yonkers ago but if you still haven't (shock, horror!) well, what are you waiting for??? |
