...with a cast of characters, the likes of which some people will never have the good fortune to know and some of us know far too many of(and probably to our detriment)! Lol. Bread and Tulips is a somewhat freaky travelogue whose heroine needs to make a life-altering decision and does so. The road to this decision is paved with giggles and a smattering of melancholy. Your enjoyment of this film might lie in your values but your curiosity will definitely be piqued along with your sense of humour. It works on a deeper level than it appears, but you're not sure which way you want to encourage the main character to go. I found the mother's abandonment of her youngest son rather tough to chew, although i can relate to the fact that she seems to be an outsider in her own family and naught more than a housekeeper. Still, I'm not sure that she wasn't being selfish in bailing rather than waking up those closest to her in an attempt to right things.... though I agree that everyone should have a life. In the end, I suppose I was happy for her in that she'd acquired a life{quirky at best)....though saddened that it excluded her children. If you are American, you might have difficulty believing this woman would make some of the moves she did.(hitch-hiking, moving in with a strange man, allowing the husband such "freedoms", etc)
