The Brothers who were on the spot!
by TonyM (movies profile)
Jul 23, 2008
Based on a screenplay by the Coen brothers (Joel & Ethan) and brought to the screen by them both with Ethan unaccredited and directors credits going to Joel Coen, with troupe of Coen regulars acting out numerous parts, you would expect a film by numbers. However, far from it we have Billy Bob Thornton who plays a barbers assistant Ed Crane to Frank (Michael Badalucco), Ed seems bored but reasonably satisfied with his nine to five job. It is when Ed goes home to his wife that the unrest seems to rear its ugly head in the shape of Doris Crane (Played by Frances McDormand). Doris works for and his having an affair with Big Dave Brewster (Played by James Gandolfini) who married into money in the form of his wife Ann Nirdlinger Brewster (Katherine Borowitz). Ed just seems to go through the motions until he hears the piano playing of Birdy Abundas (Played with gusto by Scarlett Johansson), after chatting to Birdy he realizes she needs lessons, so subsequently he needs money. A couple of nights later a late running customer knocks the barbershop door and Ed agrees to cut the stranger’s hair, Jon Polito plays the newcomer in town Creighton Tolliver. Tolliver explains to Ed his plans for the future; remember this is set in the early fifties, his big plan is ‘Dry Cleaning’ but he needs a cash investment. |
