The Count of Monte Cristo is one of the best books ever written but one that the Screenwriter obviously didn't read. The story overlooks entirely the genius of Alexandre Dumas and how it is expressed through the events that lead to the ultimate revenge exerted by Edmond Dantes as the Count of Monte Cristo. They try to turn the book into an action packed Hollywood film with a happy ending that does not resemble at all the magnificent story told by Dumas. There's so much intrigue, twists and plots in the book that action is not required and the cliches of the movies just make it look ridiculous and fake. |
