Watching Amores Perros is like watching three good films in one. The greatness of the movie, however, stems from how the three stories collide un-ostensibly to create something gritty, but hauntingly profound.

The acting is tremendous throughout, but the screenplay itself deserves much attention. Each narrative 'third' carries the weight and complexity of great literature. But it is all executed with sincerity and a lack of self-consciousness. This is where Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu sets himself apart from the field. Notice the how the apartment is shot in the second act. All of the symbolism of the paintings on the wall an the view outside is so delicately and subtly handled. Inarritu trusts the greatness of the material and just lets it go.

The last scene of the film is one of those powerful cinema moments. It ends my favorite 'act' of all the three. In it, all the cerebral complexity of the themes and relationships that have come before are reduced to one triumphant surge of life... A goose-bump moment that tops off an impressive film.
