This movie had two fantastic stories: (1) a father and son coming to terms with their relationship and (2) a great example of American success story. The father/son relationship actually reminds me of some religious stories. Basically, the father has two sons. One tries to impress the father by doing what the father says. The other does what he wants despite objections from the father. It seems ironic the father likes the son who rebels more, but the father himself is a self-made man. Thus the father actually appreciates the son who has a mind of his own. This theme is prevelant throughout the movie and closes it with the father and son having a relationship built on love and respect. The American success story comes also from the son who has a mind of his own, Gordon. In a way, the father represents mainstream society...always trying to make people conform. But nearly every success story comes from people who didn't conform. And not only does Gordon fight to keep his dream alive, he had the guts to get excellent advice from successful people in his field and then had the tenacity to follow through on that advice. And all during this time, Gordon surrounds himself with successful people who encouraged him to chase his dreams. He even goes out of his way to get his father, his initial inspiration, on his side. And doing so, he doesn't lose important people in his life while becoming successful and become bitter and unstable. He grew incredibly strong by confronting his father and they both benefited. I highly recommend young people see this movie. It is a great template for pursuing success. Just imagine the movie without the penis jokes. |
