wouldn't recommend it to my enemies

This movie was dreadful. My sister and I rented it because neither of us had seen it and we were in the mood for something new, but by the end of it we knew that we had wasted a good two hours. The story made no sense at all! Basically all that the movie consisted of is the four main characters sitting down to eat and one of the daughters standing up and saying “I have an announcement to make”, then the father replies by saying something like “how could you make such a big decision without consulting me first?”
Aside from that the movie has two other side stories. One is the sudden death of a family friend, which the director did a horrible job with. The death of this family friend seemed so random and poorly led up to. It confused the viewers because they felt like they needed to be sad but they did not know the character enough to mourn over him. So the viewers watch on with blank expressions as the characters on the screen cry and sob over a friend.
The other side story is that another family friend (this time it’s a single mother who is about the same age as the three daughters) has a mother who has taken a fancy to Hector Elizondo’s character and is an irrepressible flirt around him.
The only thing that kept this movie together was Hector Elizondo’s performance. I always like Hector as an actor and that was half of the reason why my sister and I rented this movie but I have to say that this was a lousy career choice on his part. Aside from him, the only other highlight of the whole film was the brief scenes that showed the father cooking which would water anyone’s taste buds.
But because Hector Elizondo was the only thing worth seeing in this movie I would suggest you go out and rent a different movie with him in it. Try Princess Diaries or Dear God or Necessary Roughness, but don’t waste your time with this movie. |
