While I was walking around in Blockbuster trying to find a movie to watch, I noticed the cover and for the life of me, don't know why I thought to pick it up. When I read the back of the cover, it said something like a boy finding a friend in an older man. My father died when I was 3 and my Sunday school teacher became my father figure. So I thought that the movie had some kind of plot like that so I rented it. When I was watching the movie, I was awe because I didn't realize what I was seeing and what was being suggested. But, I kept watching the movie to see how far it was going to go. When I got to the end and thought about it, I had mixed emotions because of what the movie was about. But then I tried to look at it in a mature, unbiased manner and realized that this movie is not only one of a kind, but everything about it was awesome. For a director to make a movie like this was suicide. But you got to give him credit because the images and the plot were all done so artisticly that you have to realize that this was a very good film. The boy struggling and confused with his friend's apparent homosexual lifestyle, leads him to imagine that lifestyle. His father, being abusive and distant due to the mother's death, opens up a door for him to fantasize about "Big John", who was showing interest in him. Regardless of the fact that we all know that the interest in him is disturbing and sickening, the boy is confused which just breeds not only more confusion, but a willingness to seek attention from the man who's showing interest in him, despite the fact that he was a pervert. I thought for sure that in the end, they were going to sleep together. But John, feeling guilty just for this little boy and knowing that the only reason he was in his arms was because he wanted attention from a male figure, decided to instead, try to be a friend rather than a predator. Don't get me wrong, this is an extremely disturbing, sickening movie. But, analyze it from an artistic view point and you'll be able to see that it really is a great film to watch just once. If you see it again though, you have to wonder why. |
