I was pleased they attempted to 'get real' about the whole drug usage and distribution issue in America. The use of stereotypical characters helped the audience relate the potential for this tragedy in their own, self-centered little lives. What a refreshing change from dramatic and artsie films like Trainspotting and Requiem For A Dream (both great 'art' films, maybe TOO great for their subject matter). Not since Basketball Diaries has a film so accurately depicted the 'slide' of a younger drug addict into the lifestyle of powerlessness. I was pleased with all the acting performances. The movie worked at a reasonable pace, and considering the ground it had to cover, it did a fantastic job leaving no single component of the story more screen time than the others. The actual delivery aside, this film had a very accurate look and feel, partly attributed to the use of filters to help the viewer to distinguish the seperate story lines and to give you a unique feel for each geographic element (and it adds to the suspense when characters cross from one area into another, to see them 'in a new light'). |
