"Finding Forrester" is the story of black Jamal Wallace, a skilled high-schooler who gains a scholarship to a private school because of his writing abilities. He meets several people there, including the kind-hearted Claire, a mean white basketball snob, and a teacher with a temper.
Jamal one day meets William Forrester, a one-time hit author who supposedly disappeared without a trace. Forrester helps Jamal enhance his writing abilities further, while Jamal attempts to get Forrester to write another book.
Forrester tells Jamal, "What's written in this apartment stays in this apartment." But when a writing contest rolls around and all the school's most distinguished students enter, Jamal takes a piece written in Forrester's apartment and submits it. He forgets what Forrester said, and worse, that he had used the title and opening sentence of one of the master's works.
Jamal is taken in for a long discussion about plagerism, but eventually Forrester comes to the rescue.
Jamal and Forrester have many other conversations and journeys throughout the film, culminating in a school prom, a Yankees game, a basketball tournament, a bike ride, and the ultimate spiritual redemption of an amazing master storyteller.
The acting in "Finding Forrester" is outstanding. Sean Connery and Anna Paquin are both great as Forrester and Claire. The rest of the cast is convincing too, earning this department an A+.
There are no visuals.
For people looking for a drama about writing and/or basketball, or if they love Sean Connery or Anna Paquin, "Finding Forrester is definitely worth checking out. |
