This is one of the best modern day musicals of our time. Ewan Mcgreggor and Nicole Kidman performed beautifully. This film has it all. I would say it is like a Disney movie but on film instead of animation. It's a musical, a musical about a writer who has moved to France in search of fame, truth, beauty, freedom and above all love. The setting is Paris in the year of 1900. The story is a huge flashback and starts off with toulous who is a dwarf singing a very slow song. There was a boy, a very strange enchanted boy they say he wondered very far very far of land and sea he was very wise and then one day a magic day he passed my way and we spoke of many things fools and kings this be said to me the greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return. This is in the first couple of minutes of the film and although it starts off slow it quite quickly speeds up so please dont let the first few minutes put you off if your not really a musical fan.Ewan Mcgreggor then appears to say, The moulin Rouge, a nightclub a dance hall ruled over by harold sidler the kingdom of night time pleasure. Satine (Nicole Kidman) a courtizan the sparkling diamond and she was the star of the Moulin Rouge. This film is one big flashback and he is writing about it, how he remebered it. He went to paris a year before you first see him and he says, It was 1899 the summer of love I knew nothing about harold or Satine the bohiemian world or the children of the revolution. The story he started writing before he met Satine was about love, only one problem he had never been in love.Just then an Argentinian man fell through his roof and then a dwarf followed him in dressed as a nun. called toulous. they were rehearsing a play called spectacular spectacular. he stands in for the argentinian for the role of a swiss goat herder.Audrey was the writer of Spectacular Spectacular but wasn't very good at his/her work. I honestly dont know if Audrey is a guy or woman. honest. Anyway Ewan becomes the writer for them after making a more educated disicion and getting all the group of actors respect, he celebrates by going to the Moulin Rouge. There is a duke in the club and he wants Satine to be his bride. Harold wants the Duke to invest money into his club. Audrey has gone so Ewan has to write a story quickly. Harold tells Satine to invite the Duke to her room which is actually a huge elephant. the visuals are ace. Anyway she asks Harold which one the Duke is and Harold points him out as the man the dwarf is shaking a hanky at then as she turns round Toulous (the Dwarf) starts shaking his hanky at Ewan she sees Ewan instead of the Duke and invites him to her elephant. Ewan goes up to her room ready to recite some poetry to her but she thinks he is the Duke and wants to have sex and is just being polite by putting it another way. This mix up of identities is what starts it all off. The Duke ends up being shown to her room by Harold just after (Ewan does a remarkable version of Your Song originally by Elton John) he tells her he is the new writer and not The Duke and Ewan hides as the Duke enters the room. After a few minutes of trying to get rid of the Duke he leaves but comes back as he left his hat or something and sees Satine on the bed with Ewan. Outraged the Duke demands to know what is going on so she tells him it is a rehearshal for the new play Spectacular Spectacular. The Duke doesn't believe them and all of a sudden Toulous and his friends enter the room saying "Hows the rehearsal going" to save them. Then they figure they have to convince the Duke there is a play so they get to perform it. They all convince him it's a love story set in India.Ewan is at this point improvising everything he sees around him and getting everyone else to go along with it. They do and get the Duke to invest. This is all in the first half hour of the film and the plot really thickens hereafter Ewan and Nicole have fallen in love and have to hide there love from the Duke. So Ewan writes about what is going on between Him and Nicole as a cover for the play. Honestly I wont say anymore as I hate spoiling films for people but I will say This is totally worth watching. |
