"In the Mood for Love", a simple love story set in early 1960's Hong Kong, is the first good movie of 2001.
Mr. Chow (Tony Leung) is a newspaper editor who just moved into a small rented room with his wife. Mrs. Chan (Maggie Cheung) is a wife of a businessman who is abroad most of the time, and coincidentally they have just moved next door to the Chows. Mr. Chow and Mrs. Chan become good neighbors, but eventually they find out that their spouses are getting much friendlier. The two console each other and realize that they have more in common that they thought. "In the Mood for Love" tells a great love story of two people who are torn between their emotions and their obligations to society and marriage.
First and foremost, "In the Mood for Love" is one of the most beautifully shot films I have seen in a while. Wong Kar-Wai deservedly won the cinematography award at the Cannes Film Festival, for he imbues the screen with vivid colors that exude such warmth and reminiscence that truly compliment the relationship of the main characters. If you're not into love stories, go watch this film just for the look of it.
Kudos also goes to Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung for their remarkable performances, for which Mr. Leung won the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival. They have such on-screen chemistry that makes the film work.
"In the Mood for Love" is an early candidate for my Top 10 of 2001, and I just hope that having Chinese subtitles will not deter people from seeing this film.
