This is a film that is best to watch wihout expectations. I think it is best to have an idea of Chinese culture during the period of the movie. In the West, the common idea might be 'if you want the girl you go after her because it's true love and screw everything else'....etc. Both the actions and the thoughts of having an affair were handled culturally in a different manner - everything was very secret, very subtle, and very hush hush. It was very important that things appear to be OK from all sides of a situation.
The movie is slow and sometimes scenes seem pointless but in the end it is easier to see how each piece fit into the whole. This is not an in your face let's spell everything out or try to make a novie art film type movie- it takes some thought and putting pieces together on your own with the clues Wong Kar Wai leaves you. ITMFL travels foward and backward in time and takes a few viewings to really grasp it all because of the extreme subtlety. The story is not mainly conveyed through dialogue, it is in the silence and movement and facial expressions as well. This movie creates a feeling and draws you in emotionally rather than letting you being a passive watcher/listener. Finially and importantly, it's a movie that is more about the nuances of the journey rather than the final result. |
