A highly underrated Disney gem...

This is usually the type of movie that I practically adore. It has everything form romance to adventure to heart-pounding action. It's a serious flick, but at the same time, it's a fun ride.
First off, the writing. From the countless reviews that I have read, people complain about the weakness of the plot. From my standpoint, I can't really find anything wrong with it. The Atlanteans just forget their language after so many thousands of years and while that may seem simple, it's effective and that's what counts.
Another memorable aspect of the movie is the charaters. Milo, Kida, Audrey, Sweet, Vinny, Mole and the others can be easily identified and, at times, one can relate themselves to them. As for the villains, they also make thir presence known real well. Commander Rourke and Helga Sinclair seem to be explorers at first, but they are really mercenaries and I believe that this little twist really helps the movie move along at a nice pace.
One of the biggest highlights of the film is the score. In my honest to God opinion, James Newton Howard has written one of the most gorgeous and athletic scores ever created for a movie, whether it be animated or live-action. I definetly recommend purchasing the soundtrack. The Submarine, The Leviathan, The Journey, The Secret Swim, The Crystal Chamber, and Just Do It are among my favorite tracks on the CD.
As for Mya's song, even though it was cowritten by James Newton Howard, the song isn't really all that spectacular. I mean, it isn't that bad, it just isn't that good.
As for other certain aspects, the special effects are amazing. The launch of the submarine and the movie's breathtaking finale are definite highlights. The animation is pretty darned good as well. Very unique for a Disney flick. Also, the sound effects are used to great effect. I just love the sounds of the Atlantean craft, as well as the early 20th century vehicles.
As I said, this movie is EXTREMELY underrated. Would you like it? Well that's for you to decide. As for me, I give it a perfect 10/10. Just an extremely well-done movie. My hats off to Disney for such an effort. |
