This movie marks the moment Disney decided to do things differently, unfortunately, they were only half succesful though.
While Atlantis is a good animated film that spares us from the often mediocre and useless musical numbers (thought most of the songs are cool, just out of context within a film) in many of Disney's movies and has an outstanding visual design, a good musical score, and is based in a very cool sci fi concept; the underdeveloped plot and uncharismatic characters (Milo, the lead, is the most clichéd and anticlimatic character I've seen in a long time, I mean, this guy clearly has never been on a date before) stop it from reaching a superior status.
As a side note, when I talked about the great visual design, I meant the enviroments and machines designed for the film. Since the character design is very angular and cold, which detracts from certain scenes that needed more emotion in the faces and bodies. Perhaps a more round, classic look on the characters could have prevented this.
Still, Atlantis is not a waste of time and deserves to be seen at least once by those interested in animation and sci fi, it's just that it could have been a lot better. |
