There are musicals, and then there are the few great musicals of which this is one. Even though this story veers sharply from the book, it is a great story. It deals with predjudice, lonliness and modernizing cultures. Something which must happen no matter how "quaint" those cultures are to historians. Reading the book will deepen your understanding of the issues in this movie, as will seeing the earlier version with Rex Harrison in it. I haven't seen the modern version, though I would love to see an asian man play the king. All that history stuff aside, the songs and humor in this movie are delightful and it is so relaxing to melt into the story of a great musical. Enjoy! |
