Bellucci Is Stunning But Malèna Is Slightly Boring

Malèna is the story of an adolescent boy who is discovering women and of course, of woman who is living under constant scrutiny, mainly due to jealousy from both the men and the women. The men all want to be with her and the women are pretty upset over it. The story of the boy and the story of the woman are barely even linked. At least not to Malèna's knowledge.
The boy named Renato Amoroso (Giuseppe Sulfaro) first takes notice of Malèna when he is with his peers and she is pointed out. From this point, Renato becomes infatuated with her and is constantly watching, or stalking, her every move.
Malèna Scordia (Monica Bellucci) is a woman who is pretty much alone, except for her father and her husband (who is fighting in a war). She does not know about Renato. Throughout the movie, whenever she walks through town or is seen in public, the town talks trash behind her back. The women say she is a prostitute while all the men talk about how they would like to be with her. The animosity continues to escalate through the movie until it makes the people of Dogville look like Leave It To Beaver. Young Renato is the only one who knows the truth (due to his constant spying) but struggles with the hurtful comments and gets even in his own little ways.
Malèna should not be on anybody's "Must See" list, unless you're looking for some skin from Monica Bellucci. She looks good but the skin scenes are anything but sexy. It is good for a rental or watching on HBO or something but I would not recommend buying it. |
