HG Lewis wonderful imagination

According to Wikipedia, Hershell Gordon Lewis considers this his finest achievement. I enjoyed Blood Feast more. Anyway, the vampire is quite talented compared to the rest of the usual no-talent nobodys actors. For example it's got the same actor from Blood Feast and 2000 Maniacs who tells people to leave the theatre if they're queesy about what you're about to see HGL movie trailers. Vampire has a booming voice and over-the-top facial expressions and body language much like Vincent Price. Where did this guy come from he's so out of place amongst the mediocrity? It starts out slow but things start picking up once we see him in white Halloween makeup and blue lights shined on him. He's out to enforce death reparations on the Helsing family (!) and for no apparent reason in between he offs a burlesque stipper (!) There's a lot more dialogue and a lot less gore than other HGL flicks, which isn't a bad thing necessarily after you've cringe at the non-stop-in-your-face violence in say Blood Feast or Wizard of Gore or The Gore Gore Girls. One more thing. The background music is eery at times and some of it sounds like Plan 9 From Outer Space! There's nothing in the world like horror on a shoestring budget. It creates an intense bizarro dream world to escape from our own present day dystopia. |
