A Pinheaded Pinhead Flick (plenty of gore though)

When your hero, Joe, is a whore-mongering coke addict, you're in for a bad time. It was nearly impossible to feel empathy for the main character, and stale lines like "You're out of control, Joe" delivered with all the sincerity of a daytime soap opera didn't help. Joe had a tendency to ask a question, pause briefly, and then angrily shout the same question. I think he was confusing obnoxiousness with acting.
The acting was so bad, the director had nothing to work with. There are some scenes so poorly acted you can almost hear the director saying "OK, now look sad. Sadder. Sad people don't smile Joe. Lift one eyebrow. Good. Now, turn your head. No the other way. Look the other way. Joe, look. Look at me, Joe. Look at the monkey. See me dangling the funny monkey. Now eek out another obnoxious line, you hack."
And speaking of obnoxious and confused, the quick cuts from unrelated scenes probably made sense when they were shooting the film, but editing really didn't tie it together for any overarching message. Sure, the end does turn into a mobious strip of a movie and repeat itself, but all it really does is save on set design.
One thing does redeem this horror flick. The gore. If you want to see Pinhead and the Cenobites do what it is they do, and not give a crap about who they're doing it to, this is your movie. Bad acting and editing leave you free from the contraints of a plot and unfettered by emotions and allow you to enjoy Pinhead's brutallity for its pure carnality.
Overall, if you're determined to see the whole series, sit through it. If you're just looking for a decent movie, keep looking. |
