Well done and suspenseful.

In all honesty, I found the trailer for The Strangers frightening. The whole movie, delivers instead of failing to live up expectations.
This is what a horror movie should be: suspenseful, scary, frightening. There is not one CGI effect. The audience is frightened by noises, movements and situations instead of being grossed out by the excessive gore or shocked by mindless torture.
A couple returns to a recluded cabin following a wedding reception. They are not just stalked, but tormented by masked antagonists.
The Strangers reminded me a lot of the original Halloween, in which the stalkers can be seen behind, next to, or circling the victims, but do not make an immediate strike. It leaves the audience guessing, and gasping for breath. It also does not rely on a heavy laden soundtrak, and the old "it's the cat" for a false scare.
Instead, we have a well-paced thriller. It is suspenseful, and does not go for a cheap thrill.
I will say The Strangers relies on one horror movie cliche in which "splitting up" seems like the best thing to do. Also, the Yahoo description is nothing like the movie, but I fault Yahoo with that, not the filmakers.
Overall, though, this is one was well done. |
