This movie got great movie from everywhere, so I was eagerly waiting to see this. After viewing, I can tell Stephen Chow has yet (at that time) to master his comedic act. This movie was nowhere has funny has his modern one. Probably the reason for the low review is I saw his entire good movie, and thought maybe his entire movie would be this good.

Plot: Stephen Chow play a rich kid, is a rich bastard who throwing 10 thousand dollar bill at a time on his way to the parlour, where he meet a showgirl (play by Cheung Man) but really was a disguise reformer against the government (I think). He knows kung fu and can fight but he is extremely illiterate who doesn’t even know how to write his own name. He decides to go to Beijing and become a scholar, after he was influence by Cheung Man. He made enemy with a higher official, where he was screw over when he win the competition because he can’t write. Now the king says he and his dad will be a beggar. His confident is loss, but it will eventually go back up when he learn the sleeping kung fu technique. Therefore he became the King of beggar So.

The plot is somewhat similar to most of Stephen Chow movie, though it doesn’t provide the usual Stephen Chow’s jokes. The event in this movie doesn’t provide any funny jokes, which is concentrate more on the storyline and fighting styles. Even for the plot, I have to say it was mediocre, as it was pretty predictable. This was a big disappointment for me, because there was probably a few jokes I actually laugh, similar to Wong Jing’s movie. The one thing that I can say it was good is Stephen Chow acting, it was much better than his previous year’s movie. Same with Ng Man Tat, he didn’t play a stupid role but a brilliant acting role as Stephen Chow’s dad. Who seem to spoil him and is also illiterate. Stephen Chow lover, Cheung Man (who played has a couple in a lot of movie like Fight Back to School series, All For the Winner and Royal Tramp) was pretty much a non-player in this movie. Her screen time from the middle to the end is nowhere seemed and she seems to be a non important character unlike those other movie I had mention. THe other thing that is good, but i dont really take it highly is the costume. Those bums dress up really does look nice.

I think soon I will see all of Stephen Chow modern movies, has I just brought 2 more movie that I have yet to see which should come next week.
