Pompous Self Adulation
by Joe (movies profile) Apr 21, 2006
The Player limits its appeal to the general public because it's not written to interest the general public.

Instead, viewers will be treated to scene after scene of inside-Hollywood satire and stale humor. The screenplay and the actors who participate detach themselves from the real world by immersing themselves into the ins and outs of the movie-making business.

They seem to think we will care about the monotonous aspects of their daily lives without realizing that they would no sooner find the boring elements of life for a TV repairman or electrical engineer interesting.

The plot suffers from a painfully slow pace. You keep waiting for the movie to take off, with a real story to grab your attention. Instead, the events of this story always are brought back into that mundane "insiders world" where people mutter to themselves incessantly, kiss up with fake politeness and flattery and talk over each other without regard for what anyone else is saying. Oh boy, aren't you just itching to see this movie for yourself??!

What's most amazing is that given all the big-name actors that make appearances in this film how lifeless and limited the acting is. There are no big performances and instead we must suffer through a collection of performances that center on self-adulation, arrogance, stuffiness and cockiness.
