I saw this movie ten years ago. I thought it was just a tad above average and way too overrated by critics. I recently watched it again. And I simply loved it. I found the story and performances amazing. It's a satire on Hollywood, so a lot of the jokes may only be accessible to people in the film industry. The film is best appreciated by movie buffs or people who follow cinema-related news.
This was Altman's comeback film. In the early 80's, he made a few disastrous films; so he quit making films altogether.
Interestingly, the film was made with a shoestring budget. No big studio was willing to invest in a film that made fun of themselves. Despite the low budget, there were so many actors and actresses who were sympathetic to Altman's cause and showed up as cameos. |
