Sam Raimi's first film as director and writer is a landmark horror film that changed the genre forever.Although it has many technical limitations,mainly due to the shoestring budget it is a remarkably self assured and well made gorefest and succeeds as an assault on the senses.The camera work,filming and editing are great-the acting is awful.Of course the acting merit isn't that important because Raimi wants to give his audience a horror experience of a visceral type.He does and as gory as it is,it is impossible to take any of the carnage seriously because the effects are so cheap and obviously fake.The film is complete off the wall mayhem and fun.It does manage a few thrills and scares and holds onto an eery atmosphere throughout.The demonically possessed teens are hilarious,though-even as they're being hacked to pieces by Bruce Campbell,who plays Ash and also stars in the two sequels that followed this film.He manages to create a relatively calm and human character despite the mayhem that surrounds him.His myriad facial expressions are priceless,though it does look like he's about to explode into laughter during some of the more wild sequences.His key performance is an asset to these films.Despite it's many flaws this is a groundbreaking horror film and is definitely worth seeing for fans of the gory horror genre.It is quite a spectacle,to say the least but could never be considered a great film.Never the less,it is what it is and if you can accept that then you'll be blown away by this flick.Screwball funny at times as well-you'll enjoy plenty of laughs,especially watching the cheesy effects. |
