Tom Hanks' performance was one of the best I had seen in a movie. He made the movie moved along, even during those many same and repeated scenes on the island. His gesture and body language were so real, it really seemed he had been on the islands for years. His hopelessness, and his way of communicating with himself through the volleyball, were something that would be hard to forget.
This movie was also very well made in the visual department. The first night after the crash, when Tom Hanks was drifting in the Pacific on the boat, was visually astonishing. Waves after waves of water smashed right into the camera. The whole scene was dark, except for the occasion thunder striked across the air in the storm. The sea couldnt look more powerful and frightening.
Not everything is right for this film, however. The climax of the movie never occurred. The last part of the movie, when Tom Hanks had returned to the everyday world, was disappointing. Nothing that happened during the last half an hour was able to relate to the harsh four years Hanks had spent on the island. It seemed to just ended, without much reference as how Hanks was preparing to face this world he starved to come back for. "It will be another day, never knows what the wave will bring." Sounded like he's still floating on the raft.
This ending seemed very much like Red's ending in Shawshank Redemption, when the leading characters got lost in the freedom that was so different from they were used to. Maybe the ending scene was an indication of a change of path.
All in all, the island part was good, despite being too long and repetitive; but the ending was very empty. |
