What happens when your life is robbed of your existence in society, your personal belongings, your most cherished things, and torn away from the person you love most?
In this beautifully depicted film, we see the adventure of Chuck Noland (Tom Hanks), a work-aholic Fed-Ex supervisor whom is always traveling and can't even spend Christmas with his dearly loved fiancee (Helen Hunt). He gives her a present and promises her that he'll be right back. But he doesn't get to keep that promise.
In the middle of a flight across the Pacific, the freighter plane attempts to avoid a storm when it is blown off-course and crashes in the ocean next to an uncharted island. There, his fight to survive begins. He lives off coconuts for a while and sets in for a week expecting to be rescued. He starts to try to feed off of crabs but needs to learn to make fire. After 2 days of trial and error, he makes his first flame and has made his first discovery. He then attempts to escape the island on his rubber raft, but he fails as the giant surf flips him over and he severely injures his leg.
Now he is struggling to survive physically and mentally and along the way befriends a volley-ball that he names "Wilson." We see some disturbing images of him knocking out a rotting tooth and slicing his hand open.
Four years later, he has fully adapted to the island, he is an expert at spearing fish and knowing what month it is. He then finishes his master plan and builds a giant raft and escapes the island with a package that kept his hope to be alive.
The movie has brilliant acting by Tom Hanks and exactly matching Robert Zemeckis' direction. The visuals are beautiful along the ocean and on the island. Tom Hanks should've won Best Actor for this film or Best Picture. The only movie that truely rivaled this movie in 2000 was Gladiator.
My advise is that you spend your money on buying this wonderful DVD.
A+ Oscar Worthy
