This film mainly focuses on 2 characters: Dr Royer-Collard and the Marquis De Sade. The whole film is war between these 2 characters because they were both determined to have their own way: The Marquis De Sade was determined to publish his books, whereas Dr Royer-Collard was determined to STOP the Marquis De Sade from publishing books.
My dad told me that this film is in favour of the Marquis De Sade and that they are trying to make it seem like the doctor is a bad person. I do NOT agree with what the director thinks. I do NOT feel sorry for the Marquis De Sade because I KNOW that he is EVIL; EVERYONE knows that the Marquis De Sade is evil because of the origin of the word "Sadism". A Sadist is an EVIL person who likes to watch people suffer from pain.
I ACTUALLY FEEL SORRY FOR THE DOCTOR because I KNOW that the Doctor is a GOOD PERSON. I could tell that the Doctor was GOOD because he was trying to STOP the Marquis from causing trouble. The ending was a PUZZLING because the Doctor finished off the film by producing books that were written by the Marquis De Sade! I could not understand why Dr Royer-Collard was doing this at the end of the film because he was AGAINST the Marquis De Sade. I think that the ending would have been better if the doctor had been pleased about the death of the Marquis De Sade. The Doctor was ACTUALLY THE HERO in the film; the Marquis De Sade was the VILLAIN, of course!
The doctor got married to a young woman called Simone, who lived in a convent. My mum said that in those days, young women were often looked after by nuns until they were ready to be married to the men who collected them. I think it was WRONG of the doctor to marry Simone, because he was too old to marry such a young person. People nearly always get married to people AROUND THE SAME AGE AS THEMSELVES. It was EXTREMELY PERVERSE of the doctor to marry someone who is a lot younger than himself. Dr Royer-Collard was trying to be GENEROUS to Simone by taking her to live in a huge mansion and by allowing her to decorate it so beautifully. But Simone was not happy. She felt trapped inside the mansion, even though it was so beautifully decorated. To start off with, the doctor was cruel to his wife. But his attitude changed when he saw the production of what had happened. This production was written by the Marquis De Sade and the whole purpose of the production was to MAKE the doctor feel guilty of treating his wife badly. The Marquis was trying to break up the relationship between Simone and the Doctor. During the production, the Doctor told Simone to leave the room. He should NOT have done this because it would not have made a diffence if she stayed.
In the end, Simone RAN AWAY with another man. She ran away with Prouix, the architect who was in charge of decorating the mansion. She obviously fell in love with him and felt much better with Prouix in her life. EVEN THOUGH I know the importance of being faithful, I also know that it is WRONG to force people to marry somenoe who they don`t like. Dr Royer-Collard and Simone did NOT know each other very well, so they should NOT have got married so quickly.
In the previous paragraph, I talked about how the Doctor was a HERO. On the whole, Dr Royer-Collard was a GOOD person because he was stopping a bad person from doing bad things. The doctor was GOOD most of the time; the only exception was the way he treated his wife. He was cruel to Simone, but he learnt a lesson from it: he learnt to live WITHOUT Simone. Once he saw the production, he STOPPED being nasty to Simone.
Would you like me to tell you about my FAVOURITE CHARACTER in the film? My favourite character is the King of France. I really liked him because he was a VERY FUNNY character.
My favourite part of the film was when the Emperor was looking at a book that was written by the Marquis De Sade. The Emperor PUT the book ON THE FIRE when he had finished reading it! He then said, 'SEIZE EVERY COPY! As for the author, SHOOT HIM!' it was then that the advisor stepped forward and said, 'Put the Marquis to death and history might regard you as a deathpost.' The Emperor replied, 'But I AM HISTORY!' This part of the film was so funny. I LAUGHED MY HEAD OFF when the Emperor said these things. IF YOU ARE HISTORY, it MEANS that you are dead and in the past; so the emperor was probably saying that he was the most important person in history.
There was one part of the film which was rather like the game of Chinese Whispers: it was the bit when people were spreading the news of the Doctor`s behaviour to Simone. This scene has very little speech in it and had music as the main sound to it. This scene is done with 4 stages, and 5 groups of people:
1. The other nuns in the convent told two of the men from Charenton about the situation; the nuns were complaining about the Doctor`s behaviour.
2. The two men told the laundry maid about the news.
3. The laundry maid passes the news onto Madeleine.
4. Madeleine finally passes the information onto the Marquis. This is when the Marquis writes a play about the whole situation.
When the Marquis had his quills and paper confiscated, he found other ways to write; it goes in a sequence because when the Marquis had anything confiscated, he would find other material to write with. This is how the sequence went:
1. The Marquis used wine to write on bedsheets...This resulted in the Marquis having his room stripped bare so that it was empty.
2. The Marquis used blood to write on his clothes...This resulted in him having his clothes confiscated, so that he was naked.
3. It was then that the Marquis told a story to Madeleine by talking to the inmates so that they would eventually pass it onto Madeleine...The Marquis had his tongue pulled out and confined to an underground cell.
Bouchon is just like a boy who bullied me when I was at school: Bouchon looks just like the bully from my school and also behaves like him. In this film, Bouchon was obsessed with Madeleine. I don`t know why Bouchon behaved like this, just like I don`t know why the boy bullied me at school. Because Bouchon was obsessed with Madeleine, it meant that he killed her. As for the boy at my school, the situation was a lot different because the boy was eventually THROWN OUT of the school. I was DELIGHTED when this happened because it meant that I could commit myself to my studies and rest in peace all the time. |
