Fame.Everyone in this movie seems obsessed with the idea of being famous,or getting their 15 minutes of fame at least. This intense, well made film tells the story of two immigrant hoods who come to America after serving time overseas in prison,to collect their cut of crime money from a partner. One is a vicious, hot tempered psycho the other is a wanna-be filmmaker who calls himself 'Frank Capra' and steals a video camera and records everything that the pair do.After watching some tabloid American television, they learn that anyone can be rich and famous, even killers and that nobody is responsible for their actions. They set out to make a 'movie' documenting their killings.Their main target is hotshot NYC celebrity cop Robert DeNiro.
Visually this film is mesmerizing and assaults the senses, often we watch events unfold through Oleg's camera lens. The characters are all colorful and the acting is generally good. The often satiric message about TV going too far and the shortcomings of the criminal justice system is pounded home through some potent images that are generally effective but grow tiresome towards the end of the flick.Oliver Stone came up with this same type of idea back in '94 with NBK-except that he went completely all out i a different format.
Though this film is hardly subtle or restrained,it is very entertaining and edited well with a good musical score that keeps things going.Film loses steam towards the end and the last half hour is a bit preposterous but I did enjoy seeing the scumbags get their due at the end;however predictable it was.
Style wins out over substance here big time.DeNiro is back in top form however and Kelsey Grammer is also good as a slimy tabloid reporter, though the ending scene where he's punched out by DeNiro's girlfriend is a little too reminiscent of Die Hard.Still, this is a memorable movie that entertains, makes its statement and is generally enjoyable on an action level with a few good twists. |
