Save the last dance for me

This is a feel-good dance film which is better by far than flash dance and even better than Dirty Dancing as the examination of inter-racial relationships, stereotyping and hypocrisy give it more substance. The position in which Sarah is placed creates empathy from the audience, but also makes us examine how we treat racial minorities within our schools as we are none to happy when the roles are reversed. The fact that there is opposition to Sarah and Derek's relationship prevents this film from becomming niave, childish and idealistic. Instead it comes across as adult, gritty and hopeful.
The acting isn't brilliant especially from Julia Stiles who often conveys a blank canvas and seems unnatural in her delivery of some of the stronger dialogue. However Seann is very believeable and his character comes across as loveable, wise and supportive, but at the same time torn between two worlds: very convincing.
The soundtrack is amazing and provides the backdrop to the attitudes of black culture. The perfect juxtaposition of ballet and hip hop finally joining in the last dance sequence is very interesting and mirrors Sarah's relationship with Derek. |
