In my opinion 'This is Spinal Tap' is the pinnacle accomplishment of Christopher Guest's collection of cult-labeled mocumentaries (Waiting for Guffman, A Mighty Wind, Best in Show). I would compare Guest's style to that of science-fiction writer Michael Crichton, in that they both go into exhaustive details to make their stories as believable as possible. And its with this close attention to details that allows this movie about a group of cretinous heavy-metal rockers to rise above typical low-brow humor and become a legendary film. The reason this I personally hold this movie in higher acclaim than his other works is because I can simply relate more to this particular genre. I am unfamiliar with dog shows or folk music which both are settings for his other movies. I believe this is why 'This is Spinal Tap' happens to be such a revered movie... more individuals are able to relate. I do fair warn those who will be watching this movie for the first time... beware of becoming a cult groupie. You will be instinctively force yourself to watch this movie a minimun of 5 more times. You will catch yourself quoting lines to friends who do not have a clue. And of course, you will have to rewind the movie constantly because you missed parts while rolling on the floor laughing. |
