I read the book in college and for the first time ever, I can truly say that the movie was better than the book! I choked back tears as I realized how easily many innocent men were sent to die in this country simply because they were black and in the wrong place at the wrong time. Set in apartheid Louisiana, this story touches us and makes us want to slap the character who foolishly sticks his hand in the cash register after witnessing a triple shooting during an armed robbery. Sentenced to die because the dead owner of the liquor store was white, the local teacher is selected to instruct the prisoner on how to be a man before dying. The most touching moment for me, as a school teacher myself, was when the elementary school class brought gifts to the accused and said goodbye. An excellent display of what was once only literary, "A Lesson Before Dying" seems frivolous in conception, but in action, it is a very heartwarming story that will entrap you into wanting the accused to walk. It is also frustrating for the modern viewer to see, as America once was so overtly racist, systematically undereducating a large sector of the population and creating a separate and unequal society.
