John McTiernan has fashoined one of those films which pleases you so much that you just laugh. It does make you feel so wonderful and it certainly made me feel ridiculously smug when i realised that i had watched, enjoyed and been utterly enthralled by what is quite simply the coolest movie i have ever seen. The direction is masterful; the acting is sublime-note the somewhat burning sexual chemistry between Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo- and the set pieces are second to none. The story does not sag under the weight of the romantic subplot- this enhances the characters and also the enjoyment. The music is so amazing- Bill Conti is a wizard when it comes to perfectly complementing what's on the screen with the right sounds- and the twists and turns the film takes you on are enrapturing. That set-piece at the end is the best scene of the year, one of the finest i have ever had the pleasure to enjoy, and also a masterclass in sustained tension. This is simply perfect entertaining. Out of nowhere, Brosnan is now the coolest actor alive, easily shrugging off the Bond-burden no doubt weighing heavily on his shoulders, and similarly from left field, Rene Russo is the sexiest actress alive. And she knows it and uses it brilliantly. Just ignore the blockbusters- this is the smartest, coolest and most brilliant cinematic experience for many a blue moon. Incredible. |
