Swedish Whaler George Hansen (The Terribly underrated Sterling Hayden) returns to the land which he and his father Sven, Ted Stanhope, bought twenty years earlier. He learns that he is too late, as his father was gunned down just three days earlier. After some investigating, he learns that Johnny Crale (Ned Young) was the trigger man and that his motive was that the land in town is rich with oil and is trying to run farmers off the land by any means possible.
At only eighty minutes long, there is a definite lack of content to Terror in a Texas Town. Though never boring, there is certainly nothing here that we can not find in a better western; to use a recent example, Kevin Costner’s Open Range used a similar plot of greedy developers trying to scare off men of humble professions. For a good seventy five of those eighty minutes, nothing much happens. I certainly have no problem with a movie that is mostly dialogue, but the movies primary problem its failure to build up tension before its finale, in which George faces off with Johnny using a harpoon.
I can not recommend it, but it does have strong points, including its bizarre finale, the minimalist score by Gerald Fried, and a chance to see Hayden Using a goofy Swedish accent. **1/2 (Out of ****)
