greenaway at the zoo

my favourite greenaway film, probably because I work with animals so much. like all of his films, greenaway takes a couple of ideas and then stretches them into extended surreal riffs, with several ideas interlacing. twin scientists want to know the meaning of death. someone is killing the black and white animals at the zoo where they work, so they have material for some experiments on the corpses. (more surreal touches: I swear this zoo-murderer character shows up in a london cab in a Pet Shop Boys video in the 80's...) meanwhile ...a car accident survivor named buick is gradually losing her limbs to a doctor who keeps her prisoner. it is often said this is not a film for people with weak stomachs. it has a strange intellectual-nightmarish quality, though it isn't without humour. |
