The simple judge of a comedy movie is this: did it make me laugh? The answer for Airplane: yes. And often.
In general, comedies don't stand the test of time. A movie is usually not as funny as it would have been had you seen it at its original release. I saw this one 23 years after its first release, and was still greatly amused. Granted, quite a few jokes fell flat, but as a whole, this movie contained more than its fair share of sight gags and great memorable lines. Filled with slapstick humor and other gags, in the vein of the Naked Gun films, it has the purely random style of comedy I like.
The entire movie plays like a farce. Don't let the bad acting marks discourage you. The terrible and over-the-top acting is one of the most enjoyable parts of this movie, along with the overly dramatic score.
If you saw this 23 years ago, this movie no doubt contains nostalgic value, making it more humorous. However, I believe that you can see it for the first time, and it would still be able to stand next to the great comedies of today. Give it a try. |
