Airplane! is one of the very best spoof movies ever made. It's also one of the very best comedy movies of all time. It avoids the usual pitfalls of the spoof genre to become a genius comedy. Sure, there are a few misses, but with spoofs, it's to be expected.
The cast does an amazing job of parodying a disaster movie. The Zucker brothers once said that it's funnier for spoofs to be played straight, and that technique works like a charm here. Leslie Nielsen is uproarously funny as ever in this movie.
Airplane! manages to avoid being too timely (one of the pitfalls that spoofs such as Meet The Spartans have fallen into). By doing this, it's expert writing and jokes don't just fade out of our pop culture consciousness like most spoofs.
If you thought Meet The Spartans was a classic, much of the humor may be lost on your part. |
