I know the film is old but it is one of the best films I've seen. As a teenage male I can easily associate with the decisions and regrets the actors make through out the play and the difficulty that ensues when it comes to choosing between things you love.
The most impressive thing about the movie in my opinion was Saana Latahn and her ability to convey feelings seamlessly through her eyes. You feel her pain, jealousy, and loneliness with one stare at her eyes. Those indescribable feelings and moments are captured perfectly by the actor. The innocence of the chacrter is conveyed perfectly, as she doesn't know what a gf does when she's younger, to her shyness when she's older, and her uncomfort leading to/during the sex scene.
Looking at Epps character he made decisions that many would've made in his shoes. (myself included) While you can't say his actions were right, they are all justifiable. His cheating for attention, inability to show emotions for the one he likes until she is taken, regrets and inability to show them... all of that was perfect
The movie starts out with touching moments where the two cross paths in a less romantic way and compete for each others attention (foreshadowing) by basketball and during one point practing karate in the kitchen. The moments in which the charcters fall in love are also very realistic and easy to relate to. First is when the young Epps, by himself, see the young Monica through her bedroom window. He is alone and you can see the feelings buidling. Later on you can see when Monica is on the bench, jealous that another girl had the guts to do what she couldn't for so many years and stares at Q when the girl comments on his physique.
The best sequence in the movie in my opinion is when the two are with different dates at the dance but in their eyes and emotions it is clear that they want each other (the slow dance scene is great) but yet when they get home they try and skirt around the issue a bit, but Q makes the move and everything turns out good.
The movie is only halfway through and I'll leave you to see the other twist and turns that ensue, but this movie is definetly a keeper. I give this movie a perfect score! |
