Another one of those movies where the main characters don't seem to have any direction in their lives whatsoever. It might have been more interesting, though, if the screenplay would have been a little more clear on a few matters (Incomprehensibly, the Screenplay was nominated for an Oscar; must have been slim pickin's that year!)...Laura Linney is fine; she's a good actress with a lackluster role, but she did a fine job. Mark Ruffalo is also...okay. Rory Culkin, in his screen debut, is actually the most memorable person in this film, and he looks about 8. The story? Linney & Ruffalo are siblings: Ruffalo smokes a lot of pot and sits around a lot, and Linney is so busy criticizing EVERYONE around her that she doesn't seem to realize that she is just as screwed up as her brother. We are supposed to assume that they are both "maladjusted" because in the initial scene, we are shown their parents, who are abuptly killed in a car crash. So they spend the rest of their lives whining about everything.
Know what I have to say to people like this? "Get over yourselves...and move on, for God's sake!" Everything about this film is one note. In other words: BORING!!! |
