The movie's storyline is very imaginative and eccentric enough to stand out for itself, but it's Brenda Blethyn performane that gives the movie its depth.
Brenda Blethyn portrays Grace Trevethan, an aristocrat whose "scummy" husband dies and leaves her with a broken heart and a ton of debts. We are confronted to the sadness of a lonely woman aware of her husband's cheating on her and afraid to lose her last remainder of a normal ife (her house); she realizes that she is capable of going a long way (and cross the law also) in order to keep her house and pay her debts.
Grace has a lot of friends whose well-being is very important to her; I think it's Ms. Blethyn strength and vulnerability air that makes the movie work so wonderfully.
Two thumbs up for creating a realistical environment with funny charcters (the doctor, Harvey, the vicar). Matthew's and Nicky's love story is also very touching. |
