The Ninth Gate has no senseless violence. There is little profanity, and the humor in it is as dry as a Priest on Sunday. So, many people might ask, why should I watch it?
Well, I'll tell you why you should watch it. You should see The Ninth Gate because it is one of the most intelligent films ever written, and a movie that you will have to see multiple times in order to grasp even half of what's in it.
The story line in and of itself is as follows. Johnny Depp plays a book detective who is ordered to hunt down two copies of a book reportedly written by Satan. This "bookhunt" takes him across Europe, meanwhile he is stalked by his employer and a mysterous woman. I know this sounds riducously simple, but I have decidely written it like this because otherwise I risk expolting a few of the movies "surprises". I can't even go any further on this, you'll have to watch the movie and find out for yourself.
However I can tell you that there is an incredible amount of symbolism in the Ninth Gate. I have watched this movie close to twenty times and I am still finding things which tie in with the end of the movie. Some people might say that this is a case of looking in too deeply at the movie, but in the case of the Ninth gate its not. Roman Polanski, who directed the movie, wanted there to be alot of symbolism and directed it as such.
In short, all I can say is if you are into movies which make you think, this movie is definately for you. You will also have to watch it multiple times in order to find every little "easter egg" that Polanski included in it. |
