First and foremost, American Psycho is not for the faint of heart... or stomach. Why, then, is it such an amazingly good movie? For the simple reason that it just is. Patrick Bateman is the type of character that you either completely love or completely hate. You love him because he's charming, witty, truthful, and funny. But you hate him because he's psychotic, a serial killer, and just plain mean. Christian Bale (who was picked over Leonardo DiCaprio for the role of Bateman) plays his role flawlessly, perfecting the cold gaze that has become Bateman's trademark. In comparison to some of Bale's other films, like Velvet Goldmine and Equilibrium, this is far different. It show the flexibility of his acting and definitely earns four stars in my book :) |
