She's sharp, smart, and snappier than a woman with permanent PMS. Don't mess with Erin Brockovich. She could beat Ally McBeal to a pulp any time. Forget Armani... Erin looks good in anything, and she knows it. Erin Brockovich is based on a true story about a woman who takes a large company to court to seek justice for the suffering it caused a local community. Over 600 residents are ill due to years of drinking contaminated water which they were told was safe. With no qualifications, no money and three young children to feed, Erin forces her former lawyer to give her a job. Armed with sturdy high heels, a bitchy attitude and a whole lot of guts, she ends up becoming one of the best lawyers in the country. Julia Roberts is outstanding in her best performance yet as Erin. She is strong and convincing, combined with that sweetness viewers adore. Roberts infuses her character with dignity, integrity and a charm that is totally absorbing. Far removed from her recent role in Runaway Bride, Roberts' Erin doesn't do much else but run head-on towards the prize. This picture allows Roberts to do what she does best, unlike previous roles in the light romantic comedies that cramped her style.

The picture itself is a sheer pleasure to watch, based on an invigorating script with intelligent and intense dialogue. What makes this film so enjoyable is its absolute focus on Ms Brockovich. It's about her life, her ambition and her fight. Unlike numerous films that rely on courtroom scenes to heighten the drama, the picture focuses on events outside the courtroom to illustrate Roberts' character and journey. Director Steven Soderbergh (Out of Sight) features the female protagonist in every scene, which produces a powerful and emotional bond between the viewer and Brockovich. His use of hand-held camera shots in some scenes induces a documentary feel which is extremely effective in creating a sense of realism.

Erin Brockovich is a must-see film. From poverty-stricken mother to well-heeled professional, Erin's journey is an incredible story.
