Fine performances help an otherwise dim film.

Filmmaking has reached a certain point where people have begun to think that any ordinary scandal would make a great movie. The media already turns the scandals into entertainment, and making a film about it would be all the more amusing, wouldn't it?

"Erin Brockovich" does not offer its audience amusement. It offers the audience the chance to see a common woman fight and struggle, and in the end, come out on top. It made me realize that there was really a woman named Erin Brokovich who went from nothing to everything.

Erin Brockovich (Julia Roberts) has no job. She's hired as a file clerk for her attorney, Ed Masry (Albert Finney) out of his part-selfishness and part-sympathy. It is there were she makes a discovery of contaminated and poisoned water. Brockovich defends the people and the people win. Even though the audience knows what's going to happen, it's quite a fun ride getting there.

Julia Roberts is at her best in this film, which I don't think takes much for her. She presents herself as a likable person for once. Albert Finney's performance, however, is very arguable, because I've seen many of his older films ("Tom Jones," "The Dresser"), which feature much better performances.

This film puts together the pieces that were missing from the puzzles of "The Accused" and "Legally Blonde." True story, true acting, mediocre direction. The film is more than two hours and it begins to get tedious at times. Although "Erin Brockovich" is a flawed film, I cannot say it is utterly insignificant.
