In a time when movies all-too-often celebrate the triumph of weakness over strength, good over evil, Pitch Black slaps some reality into the face of the viewer, even in a sci-fi setting. Diesel delivers convincingly as Riddick, the convicted killer and anti-hero thrust headlong into the role of reluctant savior to a clearly-dependent crew. When evil threatens, meet it with greater evil. Diesel does an excellent job of keeping you wondering throughout the movie if he is a hero or a villain, and in the end, he is simply Riddick. Cheers to the writers for going against the current and giving an ending that seems the most plausible considering the situation. The concept that so many people seem so hapless and helpless struck me as the film's only weak point, but the strength of the character of Riddick more than compensates. |
