This film was fantastic and had many themes worth exploring, the loss of identity, the need for acceptance and the mask we are all willing to wear just in order to be happy. The acting is first rate as is the direction by Minghella who always puts in a mountain of research into all of his films. In one sense it's an epic film on the other hand it is a very intimate story about the pain of one man and how he must deal with his decisions. Sadly when this movie was released only Law seemed to garner any attention and Damon's magnificent transformation was completely overlooked as was Paltrow's performance which I think topped that of her oscar winning performance. It's at once many things a thriller, a drama, a tragedy, and always very original. Today most movies don't interest me even in the slightest but I always have respect for Minghella's films he is a great story teller. Minghella and Peter Jackson are in my opinion the two greatest contemporary filmmakers. |
