most underrated disney movie

My biggest complaints with most disney movies are the saccarine, convoluted adaptations of classic stories and the endings that serve more to depress than uplift (life just never seems to work out like the ending of a disney movie, does it?). While hunchback is not entirely different in the first respect, it definitely has MUCH more of an edge than its predecessors. The antagonist, Frollo, is neither a laughable villan nor a demonized, overly dehumanized character. I won't spoil the movie, but there was a point in the cathedral with Frollo and Esmerelda where I was COMPLETELY shocked, thinking, "I CAN'T BELIEVE HE SAID THAT IN A DISNEY MOVIE!!!" (It was nuance, and nothing little children would pick up on, but WAY more ballsy than I've ever seen disney before.) As to the ending, considering the sugar-coated storyline, it was exactly as it should be.
This movie has a lot more sublty than most people give it credit for, which is why it's one of, if not my favorite disney movie of all time. Maybe not Oscar-worthy ... but still definitely an A. |
