I strongly disagree with one of the critics saying that BatB is "not the masterpiece we once thought". It is true that animation has moved on, what with Pixar and other cutting-edge companies... but 'Beauty and the Beast' remains the finest animated film ever made. It earns this distinction not through its animation- although that is admittedly breathtaking- but the strong story, brilliant music and- perhaps I should have put this first- the characterisation. There is better character development here, I feel, than in many films with human actors. You feel for the Beast, laugh with Lumiere, and find yourself literally wanting to thump the screen when Gaston attacks our gentle monster.
What can I say? It's a mini-miracle, folks! |
