Lon Chaney, aka The Man Of A Thousand Faces, for his using extremely painful devices for added effective, stars in the first of countless filmed versions of Gaston Leroux's popular Gothic romance-horror novel "The Phantom Of The Opera" as The Phantom, a horribly disfigured, murderous recluse who haunts the Paris Opera House. Mary Philbin co-stars as Christine Daae, the object of The Phantom's obsession. Enter Raoul De Chagny, Christine's child-hood friend. Their romance enrages The Phantom, who then plots to kidnap Christine and make her his eternal bride. I saw this version before seeing the 2004 movie adaptation based on the stage play by Andrew Lloyd Webber. See THIS 80-minute silent film version BEFORE watching the new version produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber (who also co-wrote the screenplay with the director Joel Schumacher, in addition to writing a new song for the film.) This version is Not Rated. |
