And so he is. Even though Christopher Lee has played the Bloody Count more times than Lugosi (or John Caradine, for that matter) it's Bela's sexy and sinister vampire whom everybody remembers and loves. The vampire you love to love? Lugosi anybody? Is a "Bloody Mary" Dracula's favorite alternate beverage? Very nuts Dwight Frye, Lovely Helen Chandler and Edward Van Sloan as Van Helsing give Lugosi something to sink his teeth into (pun intended). And Tod Browning's direction, together wirh "Freaks", is his best. The visuals are a little clunky but they work. And without a single note of incidental music (Tchaikovsky, Schubert an Wagner don't count) the tension and suspense are kept tight. However, the pacing IS slow, and if you've read the book the screenplay (based on a stage play) is slightly dim-witted. |
