Though Both Stars Are Dead The Comedy Lives On
by Eric Ryder (movies profile) Feb 25, 2008
It comes to no surprise that when you pair up the late Richard Pryor and the late John Candy together, you'll surely get a barrel full laughs. And in "Brewster's Million", it surely doesn't disappoint.
The plot is very easy to decipher. It tells the story of a minor league baseball pitcher named Montgomery Brewster (Pryor) who has recieved a $300 million inheritance from a deceased uncle (played with sheer intimidation by Hume Cronyn). On the videotape, Brewster's uncle will only give him the fortune under several conditions: For starters, Brewster must spend $30 million in 30 days and once the money is spent, he can't claim anything for himself. At first glance, you might think this is an easy task, but in the end, you start to discover that it's quite challenging to spend $30 million and get something for yourself out of it.
We follow Brewster through this demanding stage as he unintentionally loosely spends his dough on expensive hotel rooms, wild parties, negotiating with his baseball with enough money to have the Hackensack Bulls take on the New York Yankees and his run for major, by helping voters NOT to vote for him. While others will convince you that they are the right person for the job,in "Brewster's Millions", Brewster persuades you in every way possible that he's not the right person for the job which is very refreshing and quite hilarious. What's also noteworthy is the facial expression as to why Brewster is spending all that cash. Without knowing that part of Brewster's task is that he must not tell a living soul what he's doing.
It's a very fun movie to watch, and with Pryor and Candy together (God rest their souls) this film is never short on entertaining.
